Commerce Elementary 4th grader, Aaiyana Harper, was presented with the Girl Scout Lifesaving Award Medal of Honor at the April 4, 2024 Board of Education meeting for her heroic efforts in July of 2023.

This Meritorious Service award is extremely rare as it is only presented to Girl Scouts who have saved someone’s life in an emergency.

Harper sprung into action in July when her grandmother began to choke. She performed the Heimlich maneuver, which she learned at a Girl Scout meeting, and was able to free the item saving her grandmother’s life.

The Girls Scout Lifesaving Award Medal of Honor, which is a national recognition, was presented to Harper by the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan, her local service unit manager and troop leader.
